The last couple of times we’ve been talking about the two different techniques you need to use to fully understand business English. For a start, if you recall, you need to really have a strong foundation in daily English. Secondly, you need to be able to understand daily English metaphor. Well there’s a third thing that you need to be able to do, and this is based on understanding an important technique that’s used in business English. And that is to take normal English words and put them together in to lexical units, and these are called business lexical units. And just to remind you, a lexical unit is an individual word plus another individual word, so you have two words or three words together and this makes a lexical unit. And the lexical unit carries meaning that is unique to that chunk. So these two or three words together have a specific meaning that may be different to each of the individual words.

Now if we look at the article that we have been analysing the last couple of weeks, you remember that we’ve got the red technical words, the blue names, we’ve got the orange which are the metaphors, and then we have the black which is the other basic English words. And if we take those, and analyse those, we’ll find that they’re actually in many cases, lexical units, business lexical units. So we have the ‘employment report.’ Employment is about jobs is about 报告 so we have these two words put together into a very specific meaning, it’s a regular report about employment. You have ‘job market.’ Job is about the work you do, market is going to buy things, so a job market is where people buy and sell jobs, where people looking for jobs go to find jobs, where businesses go to find people who can do jobs. Okay, so job market, it’s a lexical unit. Both very simple, common English words, you put them together and you have the new idea that’s a business idea, but it’s made up of normal daily English words. ‘Market outlook,’ ‘June’s report,’ they’re all the same. So if you take this whole article and look at it again, you’ve got the technical words, five percent of the article, you’ve got the metaphors which give you the feeling; the smell of what this article is really communicating, you then have these business lexical units that again speak about business terms but using very common, daily English words, and there’s your article. The remaining black ones are just normal, very high frequency, daily English vocabulary.

So the trick to really understanding business English has three parts to it, there are three techniques here. First or all, get your foundation right; you absolutely have to have your basic English down solid or else you’re not going to be able to understand what’s happening with the business English. Secondly, you’ve got to be able to look for metaphors, understand when you see something whether or not it’s a metaphor, to be able to filter for that. And finally, you need to be able to look for these lexical units that are made up of normal English words, but have been put together for a specific business purpose.

So, you’ve got these three different things, your foundation, metaphors and the lexical units. And just to make a point, when we put Kung-Fu English together, we also paid a lot of attention to training you to look for and to sense lexical units; so when you’re hearing any English or you’re reading any English you’ll be able to know that, okay this is a lexical unit made up of these specific words, and it has a specific business or other purpose. Okay, so remember those three things; metaphors, getting the basics down pat, and looking for the lexical units.

Mon, 29 Aug 2011 20:27:18 +0000 admin 225 at https://drupal8.kungfuenglish.com

Mon, 29 Aug 2011 12:26:06 +0000 admin 224 at https://drupal8.kungfuenglish.com

Hi. Last time we were talking about the importance of daily English as a foundation for understanding any form of English, including business English. But this is an important question: why is it, that even though you can understand all of the individual words in the daily English, you can’t understand the full sentence, so you’ve got things like: ‘dampened hopes for June’s report,’ or a ‘fresh snapshot of the nation’s employment picture.’ You know what picture is, you know what fresh is, you know what nation is, but what does this whole thing mean? And this is a challenge that a lot of Chinese people have when speaking English.

Well, the secret is, that business English very frequently makes use of common English metaphors, and not just one or two, but there’s a lot. Now let’s go back to the article that we used last week, so I want you to remember this point. You’ve got to look for, specifically look for, search for, the metaphors in the language that you’re reading, that’ll help you to understand. So, as I said let’s go back and look at this article that we started looking at last week, and remember to pull out all of the red technical words, just completely delete them, so what we’re left with is the black words and the blue words. The blue words, remember, are the names of people, companies, places, the white spaces are those technical words, and everything else is the daily English. Now it gets really interesting because as you go through and analyse the daily English, you see now that all of these red places are metaphors. Every single one of those is a daily English, normal metaphor. If I pull them all out, and put them on the page this way and then we look at them, there’s about ten to fifteen percent of the article is these metaphors. Now what’s very important about these metaphors is that they don’t just take up more space in the communication than the technical words do, they’re actually much more important for communicating what the author wants to communicate. Okay, they tell you the feeling, they tell you really what the meaning of this particular article is. So if we look at this one, we have: ‘mired in a slump.’ Okay, so your body’s slumped down, you’re stuck, it’s like you’re in a swamp, you’re just really, really uncomfortable. You have ‘turbulence ahead.’ Turbulence is used for air that’s not very stable, like in an aeroplane, so there’s a metaphor like you would hear in an aeroplane, you know ‘there’s turbulence ahead, put on your seatbelt’ that’s being used in business English. ‘Hoping for a bounce,’ well a ball bounces, so this again is a metaphor for the economy going down and then maybe coming up again, like a ball bouncing. So you get the feeling for what the author is communicating from the metaphors, and they’re much more important for that than all of the technical words.

So if we take the article we see all of these technical English words in red and now in orange we have all of the metaphors, we can see how much of this language is taken up by the metaphor and the daily normal English. So, it’s back to that same point; you’ve got the daily English words and the daily English metaphor and they cover almost everything that you need to understand inside this article. This is why when we created Kung-Fu English we put together metaphor exercises to help you really begin to look for and be able to find metaphors, and then use your right brain to get a feel for what those metaphors are really about, because they’re critical to understanding the intent, the deep meaning, of the communication.

Okay, so if we look at this article, it’s all black, you go through it, you look for the metaphors, and this really helps you to get the flavour of the communication in the English. So remember metaphors give you the flavour of the communication in English.

Thu, 11 Aug 2011 18:29:39 +0000 admin 213 at https://drupal8.kungfuenglish.com 08/11/2011 - This week I want to talk about some secrets, as to how you can break the code of business English. The simple answer, first of all, the first secret, is you need to build a foundation, this is absolutely critical.

Well, what do I mean by this? Lots of people in China when they meet business English, discover that it’s very difficult, there’s a lot that they don’t understand. And the solution that most people try to use to solve this problem is to study business English; specifically business English. They buy bunnies English text books, business English guides. And if you ask them whether or not they’re interested in daily English the answer is very often; no, they have no interest in daily English, they just want to learn business English. Well, this is an important question you have to ask yourself: ‘what is business English?’ And, when you know what it is: ‘how do you study it?’ I can assure you that rote, memorising terms, is never going to help you understand business English. Why? Well let me analyse an article for you, and you’ll understand better.

This is an article, or a piece of an article, taken from CNN news story about the economy in the United States. If you look at it, if you read it, you’ll probably find it’s a little bit difficult to understand. We’ve gone through this and we’ve analysed, and we’ve pulled out some red words. The red words are the very specific, technical business or financial terms that are related to the story in question. The blue words are names of companies, or people, or places. So if you look at the red words you can see that they really don’t take up very much of the space of the article at all. It’s roughly about five percent of the total space of the article is taken up by these business words. And if you just read these words, you’re not going to understand what this article is about. On the other hand, if you read all of the black words, they’re common, everyday English words, these are the most high frequency, and most frequently met English words in the language. Then, by reading the black, by reading the high frequency words, you’re actually going to be able to understand a lot more than if you were trying to understand it through the red, technical words.

So what you have is a situation where you’ve got a foundation of daily English, and then you take the very specific technical words, the red ones, and you just plunk them in, you drop them in. When we were creating Kung-Fu English we understood this was really important, so we focused a lot on helping people master the foundations of daily English, because it’s only when you have these foundations of daily English that you can actually plug in the technical terms of business English. If you only have the technical terms, you can’t communicate, you can’t understand.

So an important concept to really understand at this point is that you’ve got to have your foundation. Your foundation is daily English language. Business English language is daily English language, plus a little bit.

Tue, 26 Jul 2011 16:05:58 +0000 admin 196 at https://drupal8.kungfuenglish.com
